The first explicit documented mention of the Tàrrega Castle dates to November 12, 1056, when the Count of Barcelona, Ramon Berenguer I, consigns it to his wife, Almodis de Marca, perpetually and as an allodial title. Thus, the Castle falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the county.

Over the years, the Tàrrega Castle has sustained numerous reforms and alterations. However, the site's enclosure remains intact and, despite modern repairs, preserves several medieval walls which hold alight the idea of the ancient stronghold, the inception of modern-day Tàrrega.
